Hear me out. I love owning a pickup truck but I don’t need one as a daily driver. I currently own a 1986 Chevy C20 3/4 Ton Reg Cab Long Box. I use this truck maybe once a month but I love that I have it for those times I need it. At the same time we just had our first child and the regular cab just isn’t gonna cut it anymore. I also wish I had something a bit more interesting when you press the go pedal as a toy as well.
In that case why not combine both and get a 4 door muscle truck? I’m never gonna tow my house or anything but I’m sure the SRT10 could handle bringing a few 2x4's from the hardware store from time to time.
Also believe it or not the SRT10 would probably be more fuel efficient since my truck gets 8mpg on a good day.

The thing that sucks about the quad cab is it’s auto only.

Transmission shredder, that there truck.

You win some you lose some.

Why do you need a 4 door if you only use it for little things once a month? You have a daily driver.

It is probably very close. V10 and 4.56 gears. And probably only premium fuel.

I feel like the older Ford Muscle trucks (SVT Lightning) would be cheaper and easier to drive everyday.

Even the 5.7L Hemi is a wonderfully fast truck. I used to do many burn-outs in mine with the kids in the back. They liked that truck, it was very sporty.

Test the car seat in the back. I was shopping quad cabs for a bit and I found getting the car seat in and out of the back of the truck was no easier than my wife’s Corolla.

it’s one of those things. If I want to go out on a cruise on a nice Friday evening for ice cream or something I’d like to be able to take the little guy with me.
I don’t “need” it and can make due with what I have but instead of keeping the truck and buying a separate toy why not just make the truck the toy?
![]() 03/01/2016 at 17:28 |

I won’t drive it everyday (I’m not a total douche) and the whole reason behind it is because I no longer want a reg cab.

Why not just channel your funds into your kid and not get a toy?

How so? It has the same tranny that is used on the Cummins. The Cummins has more torque than this doesn’t it?

Had one.
Not special enough I’d like something that stands out a bit more I literally see dozens of these everyday.

I learned to drive in a 2WD regular cab truck, and yeah I quickly learned I'll never buy a regular cab again. One question though would be are you ever likely to drive it in the Snow? 2WD trucks in the snow is great for learning skid control, because using oversteer to get around a corner is about the only way you can drive a 2WD truck in the snow. That or get a hundred sand bags to load up the rear. Otherwise, yes I love the SRT10, and would like one myself. A colleague owned one and it was a fantastic truck. I'd get one, but I need 4WD. I have wondered how easy it would be to make a 4WD out of an SRT10, but probably not worth the headache. Probably the closest I would come is buying a wrecked SRT10 for the seats and the Viper motor and dropping it into a regular 2500 4WD Ram.

I support this decision.

Problem with the quad cab is baby seats, they just don’t fit in back. You need a crew cab if you have baby seats. Once they are about 3-4 and they fit in a booster seat then a quad cab works.

Why buy a truck to have it sit in your driveway 6 days a week?

Why are you on oppo?!
![]() 03/01/2016 at 17:44 |

Probably won’t be driven in the snow much unless the wife absolutely needs something from ikea or something.
My current old beater truck is RWD and my last truck was also RWD.
Also I daily drove an SRT8 Challenger for 3 years so let’s just say it’s not my first rodeo with a RWD in the snow.

I commend you for getting sober but it seems you have lost some of your spunk in the process.

I’ll make a case for a V8 Colorado

no you just need the right baby seat.
The combi Coccoro is the smallest front to back rear facing seat you can buy and is ideal for quad cab trucks.
once there are front facing anything is fine. This is not a extended cab Chevy S10 we are talking about here.

The real question is why would someone daily drive a truck when they only need it once or twice a month? To me that is a much bigger issue than the opposite.
It would be a weekend cruiser occasional Ikea run truck.

This is the only Colorado I want to hear about.

Sounds like a great plan, I'm sure the V10 would also depreciate far slower, so you wouldn't lose much money if you decide to sell. One of my neighbors had one as a daily driver, and he had 2 car seats in the back. He no longer has it but I'll ask him how he managed.
![]() 03/01/2016 at 18:04 |

Mileage would be the biggest factor regarding depreciation on these. if you keep the mileage reasonable you should be able to off load it fairly easily as they’ll just keep getting rarer.

I knew you weren’t going to keep that C20 forever like you said :)
SRT10? Why the hell not?

Try the seat before you buy the truck.

Movin on up in the world. Still love the C20 but no use in having two trucks and if I can’t bring the little guy with me what’s the point.
This is just a pipe dream for now so I’ll probably just end up keeping the C20 but you never know what the future will bring.

I ask myself the same question every day.

I wasn’t giving you crap, I totally understand. That’s the reason I sold my ‘74 Apollo and bought the Roadmaster. I got bored of driving around by myself once a month.

The only thing I know for sure is that I will always have a truck at home. Best thing ever when you are not burdened by the abysmal fuel mileage since you have a proper daily driver.

I have driven one and they are a blast, do it.

Since the truck you have is probably not worth all that much these days, do you think you could keep that and get a car as well? That’s what I’d do, especially if insurance is basically negligible, but it depends on if you have the space to keep the truck.
![]() 03/01/2016 at 19:16 |

Is a muscle truck really a fun toy? Does flooring it really stay fun for that long? Do you really want to beat up your toy by doing “truck things” with it?
If the answers to those questions are yes... I say go for it! Should be a lot of fun. Oh, I’d also worry about expensive repairs and maintenance for the sporty bits. Seems to be counter to what a truck should be... but that’s just me.
![]() 03/01/2016 at 19:23 |

Yep. For me I drive so little that bad fuel mileage isn’t even that big of a deal on a daily driver. Like you, daily driver or not, I’ll always have a truck.

My truck is probably worth about 3 grand. I had 3 vehicles previously when I still had my Lincoln Continental and it was taking up too much space. I have a 3 car garage and a 3 car driveway but my wife also has her car and I hated playing tic tac toe with the cars to get the one I wanted to drive out. If I kept my truck and got a separate toy I’d be looking at about an extra $30-40/month for insurance.
![]() 03/01/2016 at 20:50 |

believe it or not parts are not really more expensive on this than on a normal truck. It would still be cheaper than any non M BMW repairs.

I have a real feeling that we are. The jealousy I have of your Lincoln is unreal. WAY cleaner than mine was. I don’t remember is yours a 400 or 460?

With my situation, I could probably keep the truck somewhere else for the very occasional use it would get (my in-laws have a barn, for instance). But yeah, playing driveway/garage Tetris is no fun.

400, it was the only engine available in 1979.
We need a youtube channel where we get ridiculous vehicles and do funny stuff with them.

They might be the same price but will they need to be serviced more frequently? It sounds like price isn’t really the major factor for you so I’m thinking more of the annoyance of having to more often maintain the truck compared to say, my “once a month” dakota that drives “good enough” even if it does need maintenance.
Also, as I thought about it more throughout the day, the spoiler and bed cover/cap thing look like they’d get in the way. I’m sure they’re removable and all, but the whole idea of having a once a month truck is the convenience of having all that practicality ready and waiting to go, not having to fiddle around with stuff. I’m still leaning towards it being a good idea.
![]() 03/02/2016 at 12:41 |

This truck would probably see 5000 miles a year so maintenance is a non issue. As for the truck cap/spoiler. I’d be removing it permanently and I’d Line-X the bed.

Sounds like you’ve got it figured out! Go for it!
